Many believe that the history of this holiday that is celebrated on February 14th every year is based on the story of early Roman times. A man named Valentine was a clergyman and that the ruler at the time was a fellow called Claudius II, an emperor, who was ruling Rome.

A popular version of the history of this holiday is that Valentine was a priest and that an emperor by the name of Claudius II was ruling Rome. Claudius believed that single men made better soldiers because they were not distracted by thoughts of love and would not allow members of his army to marry. Supposedly, Valentine did not believe this and secretly performed marriage It is thought that the history of Valentine’s Day goes back to the third century in Rome. Some say that Valentine was an imprisoned man who had fallen deeply in love with the daughter of the jailor. Just before he was to be executed, he wrote a love letter to the young lady, proclaiming his love and signed the letter ‘from your Valentine’. The same message is used in Valentine’s Day cards to this day, and also stamped on candy and gifts.

So, as you can see, there is more than one theory as to what is the real meaning behind this day set aside to celebrate love. No matter what you may believe as to the origins of Valentine’s Day, no one can argue the fact that it is a day to shower the people you love with symbols of your devotion.

We all know that Valentine’s Day is marked by the exchange of candy, flowers, gifts, jewelry and other gestures to celebrate our love for one another. Today this holiday is very much commercialized with stores full of heart-shaped gifts, candies of all types, Valentine-themed toys, clothing, perfume and collectibles.

Stores across the United States carry special Valentine’s Day greeting cards, and the United States Postal Service issues a special, one of a kind stamp every year to mark the special day. The sending and receiving of Valentine’s Day cards is very popular and a tradition that has been carried on for years and years in the USA.

Many couples also pick the 14th day of February as the day to marry. What a better day to exchange vows with the person you love than on Valentine’s Day?

So, as noted, there are many, many ways to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, but one thing everyone can agree on, is that the 14th of February is a day set aside to honor love and to honor the loved ones in our lives.
